Why hydroponics growers watch EC and pH

In hydroponics, the nutrient solution is the root environment. EC and pH are two of the most common signals growers monitor because they help indicate nutrient strength and solution balance.

EC

Electrical conductivity, or EC, helps indicate the concentration of dissolved ions in the nutrient solution. A reading that drifts too far can suggest the solution needs adjustment or replacement.

pH

pH affects nutrient availability. If pH moves outside the desired range for the crop and system, plants may struggle to access nutrients even when those nutrients are present.

Temperature and stability

Temperature can influence plant performance, microbial activity and sensor readings. Monitoring temperature alongside EC and pH gives a better view of the system.

Using smart monitoring carefully

Continuous monitoring helps growers see trends and respond earlier, but calibration and maintenance still matter. Keep probes clean, use fresh calibration solutions and confirm unusual readings before making major corrections.
