Where to Place a Temperature and Humidity Sensor

Quick answer: Place the sensor where it represents the environment you are trying to manage. Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, cooling outlets, humidifier discharge, wet surfaces, doors, and stagnant corners unless one of those locations is the intended measurement target.

For plant and greenhouse monitoring

Start near the plant canopy or management zone, protected from direct radiation and with representative airflow. As plants grow, sensor height may need to change. Large spaces, separate benches, different lighting zones, and airflow patterns often require more than one sensor.

For rooms and storage

Avoid placing the sensor directly against exterior walls, windows, vents, equipment exhaust, humidifiers, or frequently opened doors. Use a location that reflects stored products or occupied space, then add sensors for known hot, cold, damp, or poorly ventilated zones.

For enclosures

If the goal is to understand a gradient, use separate sensors for warm and cool zones instead of averaging two different environments. Protect probes and cables from water, animals, tools, and routine maintenance.

How to compare two sensors

  1. Place both sensors together under stable conditions.
  2. Align their height, exposure, airflow, and distance from surfaces.
  3. Allow enough time for both sensors to stabilize.
  4. Compare the result with each device's stated accuracy and response characteristics.
  5. If the difference follows the sensor when locations are swapped, investigate the sensor; if it stays with the location, investigate the environment.
